Water, the most important liquid on the planet, makes up roughly 60% of the human body. That is why it is so important to stay hydrated. While there is no “real” recommended amount of water you should drink a day, most doctors agree that you should try and consume 8-10, eight ounce cups (64-80 fl oz) of water each day. The health benefits of drinking water are numerous and some are even surprising. Here are some amazing benefits of drinking water:
  • Keeps your skin hydrated. Your skin is mostly made of water. When dehydrated, it can lead to disorders and wrinkles. Drinking water is the easiest and cheapest way to stay looking young!
  • Lubricates your joints. Cartilage contains 80% water. Dehydration lessens the effectiveness cartilage has on joints and, in turn, leads to pain and inflammation.
  • Aids in weight loss. Water is the perfect zero calorie drink to replace soda or other sugary drinks. Also, drinking a big glass of water before a meal will help prevent overeating.
  • Promotes healthy kidneys. Your kidneys are primarily used to filter liquids that come through your body. When dehydrated, kidney stones can start to form and, in extreme cases, dehydration can lead to kidney failure.
  • Relieves allergies. When your body is dehydrated, its airway is constrict. This will heighten breathing difficulties brought on by allergies or asthma.
  • Helps with healthy digestion. The digestive system is reliant on water to process food correctly. Dehydration can lead to digestive problems, constipation, and heartburn.
Water is so important to our everyday lives that we should be making a concerted effort to drink the recommended amount . According to the Institute of Medicine, in 2013 almost 75% of Americans suffer from chronic dehydration. Don’t become a statistic and make sure to get at least 64 fluid ounces of water each day. There are plenty of ways to make sure you get your water each day. Try remembering to drink a glass of water after every bathroom break or using one of the numerous water tracking apps. If those require more effort than you want to put in, just having a water bottle nearby will help with hydration!

How to Beat the Heat!Some days, it is just too hot to do anything outside. That doesn’t mean that you have to just sit and twiddle your thumbs on the couch all day! There are plenty of great ways to enjoy yourself without melting in the hot summer sun. The most obvious way to enjoy a day that’s breaking the thermometer is to go to the beach, pool, ocean, or body of water equivalent. But, sometimes it is too crowded to really enjoy your time there. Here are some other great ways to enjoy your summer days without burning up!


As someone who enjoys activity and competition, a great way to get out of the heat but still challenge yourself and friends is to go bowling. It is a great way to get together while not just loafing around the house. You don’t have to go with others though! If you want a little alone time you can always challenge yourself and see how well you can do. Not only is bowling fun and in conditioned air, but a bowling alley can also have surprisingly good food. You may just find a great new place for lunch or to grab a pizza.


Another one of my personal favorites and time tested classics, the movie theater! Not only will you have to bring a sweater to the typically cold theater, if you go in the middle of the day you will probably have the whole cinema to yourself. It is a great way to pass the time and catch up on all the summer blockbusters. Stay on top of all the latest pop culture, stay cool, keep your nights free, and keep yourself from going stir crazy in the house when it’s too hot.

How to Get Back to RoutineSummer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. With fall, comes a little more regularity. Gone are the days of going to the beach in the middle of the week or taking a Friday off work simply because the Sun is shining. It is officially time to buckle down and get ready for fall. Fall is the last bit of “regular” time before the hectic season that is the Holidays. So, it is ever so important to get into a routine sooner than later for both your mental and physical health. While getting into a “rut” is not great for your overall health, a routine allows your body to prepare for and embrace obstacles regularly.  Here are a few tips to help you get your nose to the grindstone and get yourself right for the upcoming seasonal changes!


  • Exercise at the same time each day. This will allow your body to get ready for physical activity and recovery each time. Erratic exercise can throw off your body’s internal clock. Exercising on a regular schedule will maximize your daily energy and your quality of sleep.
